Michiko Shimanuki // Composer, pianist & piano teacher

Shimanuki plays...with a pointed delicacy, as its slow, dream-like tempo dictates, pointing up in light a slightly [neo]-classical mode that Ravel’s own neo-classicism highlights…Consummate exploratory playing by a composer-pianist wholly inside these idioms.

My Background

I studied with the late Dame Fanny Waterman, the late Kendall Taylor CBE, Aquiles Delle-Vigne and other prominent pianists in Europe and Japan. I spent my twenties giving concerts and then went on to study composition.

In 2003, I was awarded a full scholarship to study with Betsy Jolas at the master class at the Academie de Musicale de Villecroze in 2003. I completed my Ph.D. in Composition at King’s College London in 2011.

Since 2004 my music has been performed by the London New Wind Ensemble, Ian Mitchell, Ellie Blackshaw, David Sutton Anderson, Catriona Scott, Sasha Valeri Millwood, and other professional soloists and ensembles and by myself in London, Hertfordshire, Brighton, at St George’s Bristol. Every year since 2009 the London New Wind Ensemble has premiered my works which range from pieces for solo instrument (oboe, bass clarinet, violin and piano), duo, woodwind trios to woodwind and string ensembles. I have my music broadcast on radio stations specialising in women composers and contemporary music in the UK, USA and the Netherlands since 2014. One of my compositions was released by Ablaze Records USA in January 2015 in their Millennial Masters, vol.5.

I have resumed my performing activity since 2011 and have given concerts in London, Hertfordshire, Lincolnshire and Brighton. In 2018, I gave a recital of contemporary music at the Borough New Music in London including a premiere of a piece specially composed for me by Barry Mills and works by composers such as Diana Burrell, Edwin Roxburgh and Poul Ruders. In 2019, I celebrated Barry Mills and John Hawkins’ 70th Birthday performing their music in London, Hertfordshire and Brighton.

In October 2021, I had the privilege of recordingWinter Images, composed by Barry Mills for me, for Claudio Records. I have also recorded my own compositions, Dead Still, Another Life and Climbing Roses with Chiaro-Audio in February 2020 and the recordings were broadcast on Radio Monalisa in the Netherlands in December 2021.
